Seven students participating in Magee Secondary’s Leadership program were given a challenge: make a difference in your community.
Without the help of a teacher, they had to identify a project that would benefit others, raise awareness of it, and take a leadership role. For Uma and her friends, supporting homeless families in the Downtown Eastside was the cause that they felt most passionate about and could have an impact on.
Only 13 and 14 years old themselves, the group was surprised to learn that boys one year younger than them were not allowed to stay in shelters with their mothers except at one place: Springhouse shelter. Recognizing how traumatic it would be if they had to leave their families at that age, the students have organized a fundraiser so that as many families as possible can have the opportunity to stay together. In just a few short weeks, this group of spectacular students have created posters, ordered food, collected donations, prepared raffle prizes and much, much more.
If you would like to help support Springhouse and the community spirit of Uma, Aria, Lola, Miriam, Koby, Amanda, and Mikah, please join them at the Greenhorn Cafe on February 18th for delicious food and fantastic raffle prizes! Thank you for opening your heart!
