On December 6, 2018, the fourth annual Yule Duel carolling competition will fill Gastown’s historic cobblestone streets with holiday songs and festive crowds for a good cause.
The family-friendly holiday event attracts thousands of people who sing-along with local choirs to raise funds and awareness for The Bloom Group’s May’s Place, the Downtown Eastside hospice that has provided compassionate end-of-life care to vulnerable and marginalized people since 1990.
“Last year Yule Duel raised over $50,000 for May’s Place. With these funds we were able to expand our services and programs, ensuring that vulnerable citizens get the best end of life care,” said Michele Sutherland, Manager of Hospice Services at May’s Place. “Yule Duel is a unique fundraising event that brings together people from the Lower Mainland in a night full of song for an important local cause.”
“It’s not surprising it’s the Lower Mainland’s largest carolling event – people just love it.”
Additionally, volunteers of all ages provide the melody behind the scenes at Yule Duel serving as choir advisors, social media gurus, set-up and production crew members, and Yule Duel ambassadors for the evening. If you want to help make Yule Duel a magical evening, visit the volunteer section of the Yule Duel website.
In this fun-filled carolling competition, audience participation is key, as onlookers vote for their favourite choirs, helping carolers make it to the dueling sing-offs, where a panel of celebrity judges will decide the winner. For each donation of $5.00, spectators can buy a voting button which will give them the ability to vote for a choir to make it to the finals.
Fan favourites and former winners Notre Dame Platinum Girls and Iron Men, Zing! Children’s Choir and Mom Choir are back to defend their titles against newcomers Little Flower Academy, St. Georges School Junior Choir, Mulgrave Chamber Choir and Sarabande- a sub choir of Vancouver Bach Choir. The choirs will perform a variety of musical styles including acapella, jazz, pop, rock and songs in different languages, showcasing the holiday traditions of many cultures.
New to this year’s event is an opening performance from three-time Grammy award winner and R&B Hall Of Fame inductee, Dutch Robinson. The smooth sounds of this legendary musician will float through the streets of Gastown at 6:00 pm. Additional highlights include the return of The Marcus Mosley Chorale and the celebratory end of caroling parade down Water Street lead by The Carnival Band.
