Issue 3. June 2021.
Summer edition
Welcome to the summer 2021 edition of BloomBuzz!
A New Start!
Ann moved from Powell Place women’s shelter to Cordova House in March 2021. She is motivated to share her story to help others:
“Maybe it will happen to somebody else and I can give them encouragement. Don’t give up. We’re like little birds. I knew when I had to leave Powell Place I was leaving the nest but they brought me here (Cordova House).
I have more independence at Cordova. We can come and go whenever we want. Homemakers are good to us. Medical care is here if you need it. Food is good. They make a beautiful clam chowder.” Despite having endured a lot of hardship in her life, Ann has managed to stay positive and retain a good sense of humour. “I have to,” she said. “Otherwise I’d go crazy.”
A New Home for Adult Guardianship
We are excited to announce that Adult Guardianship has a new home! As of June 7, 2021, the AG program’s new address is 317 E. Hastings St. The new location provides increased safety, comfort, and access for clients and staff.
“It’s really good timing because our program has grown so much, and we needed a proper space that will allow us to continue to grow. In 2010 we had 200 clients, and now we have about 1700,” said Tyng-Wey Fan, Manager of Adult Guardianship. “Being here [in the new office space] and still being in the Downtown Eastside to serve our neighborhood means a lot.”
This new location would not have been possible without the generous support of 625 Powell St. Foundation.

New Social Worker: Meet Mitra
Mitra joined The Bloom Group recently as Social Worker for the new You’re Hired! program which provides employment assignments and skills training to residents.
Formerly a Rapid Rehousing Support Specialist and Shift Supervisor at Powell Place and Springhouse, Mitra is thrilled for the opportunity to connect residents with paid work opportunities. “It’s rewarding to see the residents excited about their new employment options. It gives them purpose. It’s important for everyone to feel productive and valued.”
The Bloom Group is very grateful to B2Gold for generously donating $125,000 to develop and launch You’re Hired!
Donor Buzz
“I really like the variety of services that you provide in a very high needs area. It makes me feel really good to be able to support (if even in a small way) this wonderful work.
We all go through periods in our life when we need various types of support from others. I feel very blessed to be in a position to offer financial support at this time.
The Bloom Group does not just offer band-aid solutions. You provide sustainable solutions by helping people develop skills they can use in the future.” – Karen Bowles, Bloom Donor
